Running a Marathon

Introduction:

Who works out at least three to four times a week?

Who has a membership at the gym?

Some of you do and some of you don’t.

Personally, I enjoy working out and I go to the gym at least five times a week. However, sometimes

it can get a little boring to do the same workout over and over again. It is this reason that prompted

me to join a marathon.

 Body:

There are several types of Marathons. I ran a 10k fun obstacle course marathon called

“Down and Dirty.” Obstacle course marathons are marathons in which obstacles are

set up along the route to provide an added challenge for the participants, for

example, climbing or jumping over walls, crawling through tunnels and swimming

through water. A second local obstacle course marathon that I considered when

researching marathons is called “Tough Mudder.” I chose “Down and Dirty” both

because the timing worked out better for me and because it was more suitable to my

level.

 Other marathons include fundraisers and community marathons. Fundraiser marathons

include walkathons, bikeathons and swim a thons. These programs are organized to both

raise money and awareness for a specific cause. For example, during a walkathon for breast

cancer, people dress in pink and walk to raise awareness and charity to fight breast cancer.

 Community marathons are marathons where people get together and run along a marked

route from a designated start point until the finish line. The objectives include increasing

community spirit and encouraging outdoor physical movement. These marathons can also

be referred to as city marathons or statewide marathons.

 One of the most popular statewide marathons is the New York marathon. This marathon

crosses through the five boroughs of New York City It is one of the largest marathons in

the world, with 45,103 finishers in 2010. It is among the pre-eminent long-distance

annual running events in the United States, having been established in 1970. In 1976 the

New York marathon expanded from Central park, to include all five boroughs of NYC,

and was at that time dubbed the first ‘urban tour’ marathon. Other well known statewide

marathons in the United States include the Boston Marathon and the Chicago Marathon.

 Who is eligible to join a marathon? Each marathon has its own eligibility criteria. However

there are marathons that cater to various populations. there are marathon that are geared

towards children others that accommodate individuals with disabilities and others are

developed according to the skill level of the participants. Therefore anyone that who wants

to do so can find a marathon to join.

Preparation

2. To run a marathon you would need some preparation.

choose

 sign up to (Internet or phone)

 receive a number and a tracker, (tracker makes sure that the runner ran the whole length

of the marathon, and can accurately see witch runner passed the finish line first.)

 Training

 Training before a marathon, it is very impotent to get your body ready the run. The

runner needs to have a strong body and good managed heart rate. Therefor before

the run you need to strengthen your body and get into good shape, that you can get

through the whole run easily and in order to make sure you don’t breakdown before

you get to the finish line.

 There are many different exercises that are very good to do to prepare for a run.

For examples: push-ups and sit-ups, pushups strengthen your arms and is sit-ups

straighten your abs this exercises help strengthen your body, because endurance in

a huge part of running.

 I have trained by running around the boardwalk near to my house for 1 hour 4 times

a week. Before and after stretching.

 Having the right attire for a marathon is essential for a marathon, especially wearing

the right shoes. In running it is very impotent to have the right balance between

support and comfort. In an article in the “Canadian press” published in February

2010, the author explains the importance of finding the right pair of running shoes.

The author goes on to say “ensuring the right fit for your workout shoes is

essential”, I agree with this statement because without the proper pair of shoes,

your feet can get injured and force you out of the marathon.

Your clothing should be comfortable, easy to run in, and should protect you from

the elements and be sweat absorbent.

(Discuss start, finish, ect)

There are many benefits…. Physical, social, psychological (accomplished:

achieving a goal.)

3. (The aspects of running a marathon: aside from the actual running, a marathon has

effects on your psyche.

 Running a marathon gives you Motivation to work out, when you running a marathon you

not just working out you are working tours a goal to accomplish. Marathons are done with a

group of people and in exciting atmosphere. Satisfaction, when you hit the finish line

(working for something and accomplishing it is one of the biggest satisfactions you can get)

Risks:

Overexertion= cardiac arrest/ other health issues

Conclusion: . Whether or not you work out, a marathon can be a fun, challenging and exciting

activity to get involved with.

By running a marathon you challenge yourself and you’ll unlock a true self sense of

accomplishment, in addition to having a great time. I hope you all have learned something from my
